Born in Carlet, Spain, Bernardo Cifres Amat began his musical studies at his hometown’s Unió Musical school of music. When he was 11, he started playing the horn with Manuel Campos. Later, he studied with teachers J.J. Llimerá and J. Rosell. He received Honorable Mention at the conclusion of his elementary degree and a scholarship from Fundación Santiago Lope (Valencia). He has completed courses with professors including V. Zarzo, F. Burguera, D. Clevenger, S. Dohr, and E. Terwilliger, who has continued to be his professor since 1995. He has also studied natural horn with J. Rentería and T. van der Zwart.
He has performed with the Conservatorio de Valencia orchestra, Madrid’s Camerata del Prado, Collegium Instrumentale Chamber Orchestra in Valencia, the Basque National Orchestra, Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, the Munich Philharmonic, Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra Pablo Sarasate, Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra, Oviedo Filarmonía, and more.
As a professor he has worked at C.E.M. Juan Antxieta in Bilbao, as well as Vitoria’s Conservatorio Jesus Guridi. Likewise, he has worked with youth orchestras including Jove Orquesta de la Generalitat Valenciana (JOGV); Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya (JONC); Joven Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid (JORCAM); and Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE), among others.
He has also taught a specialist university class on “Analysis and Musical Interpretation” at the University of Oviedo. Furthermore, he has done master classes at the conservatories of Melilla, Tenerife, Ontinyent, Bilbao, Carcaixent, Almoradí, Zaragoza and Catral, as well as advanced conservatories in Oviedo, Alicante, Salamanca, and Tenerife, among others. Moreover, he has participated in summer programs with Ad Libitum, San Miguel de Salinas, Unió Musical in Torrent, Unió Musical in Carlet and Valderrobres, among others.
In August 1989, he was horn soloist for the Banda Municipal of Bilbao and from August 1990 to October 2004, he was horn professor for the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa. During the 2005-2006 season, he was principal horn for the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra Pablo Sarasate.
He has performed with conductors including Yaron Traub, Günter Neuhold, García Asensio, Manuel Galdúf, Gilbert Varga, Antoni Ros Marbá, Juanjo Mena, András Schiff, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Valery Gergiev, Vasily Petrenko, Christian Vasquez, Gianandrea Noseda, Ricardo Chailly, Gustavo Gimeno, and Vladimir Jurowski, among others.
Since its founding in September 2006, he has been horn soloist for the Orquestra de la Comunidad Valenciana as a resident soloist at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía. Furthermore, during the 2013-14 academic year, he was the department chair for horn studies at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón (CSMA).
